Tula Pink HomeMade Challenge

HomeMade Challenge

Enter the HomeMade Challenge with Daz Fabrics!

Challenge Runs: March - June 30, 2020

What Is The Purpose?

The challenge encourages quilters to pay tribute to what drives the quilter/sewist/maker to create with their hands, through the creation of a 60” x 60” quilt featuring 80% of the new Tula Pink HomeMade fabrics and using Aurifil threads. The jury, including Tula Pink, will select 12 quilts that speak to the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.”

The 12 selected quilts will have the chance to be part of the HomeMade Challenge exhibit at the Fall International Quilt Market and Festival in Houston, TX in October 2020, and the opportunity to win over $10,000 in prizes!

Challenge Overview

Competition theme: HomeMade

HomeMade - adjective (hōm′mād′): made or prepared at home, locally or by the maker's own efforts.

The humming of the sewing machine, the repetitive motion of a needle passing between the fibers of cloth, the joy of a fresh rotary blade, the gentle steam of a hot iron, the accomplishment of making something with our own hands, these are the things that bind us together. What to some may seem foreign, to us it defines our very existence, that which expresses who we are and amplifies our sense of accomplishment and self-worth. The focus of the HomeMade juried exhibit is to create an item that celebrates our community of makers and all the glory, attitude and beauty that comes from the privilege of saying “Hey, I made that.” Each quilt will pay tribute to what drives us to create with our hands. It’s about creativity, intention, approach, quality and the pure sense of joy achieved by playing with fabric, threads and finely-crafted tools.

The entries can be art quilts or traditional quilts that speak to the theme. Any techniques—piecing, appliqué, embroidery and/or manipulated fabric, etc. may be used.  Twelve quilts will be selected by the jury to be part of the special exhibit.

Who may enter: The entries may be the work of more than one person as long as proper credit is given to all involved in the actual completion of the quilt. The person entering the quilt must have been involved in making the quilt. Limit 2 entries per person or group to their local quilt shop. Full-time employees of any associated Jaftex divisions, Aurifil Thread, Daz Fabrics or Quilts, Inc. are not eligible.

Size of EntriesEach work should be no smaller than 60 inches (152.4cm) square (if a quilt is close to these dimensions but does not quite meet the requirements, the entrant may still enter their work). Each entry must have a 4” (10cm) finished sleeve or casing sewn to the top back edge of the quilt. Sleeves should be secured with stitching at the top and bottom edge of the sleeve. A cloth label with the entrant’s name, address, email address and telephone number must be securely sewn to the back of the quilt.
